Most conventional pads are made from a blend of plastic, rayon, and synthetic fibers — then bleached with chlorine and treated with artificial fragrances to mask odor. The top layer that sits directly against your skin is often a petroleum-derived plastic film, not a natural material.
Organic cotton pads like OCBON use 100% certified organic cotton as the contact layer — the same material used in medical dressings and infant products. There's no chlorine bleaching, no synthetic fragrance, and no plastic surface against your skin.
The practical difference: organic cotton breathes. It allows airflow rather than trapping heat and moisture, which reduces irritation, bacterial growth, and the general discomfort many women accept as normal during their period — but don't have to.

OCBON pads earned an Excellent grade from the German Dermatest, one of the most respected dermatological testing bodies in the world. That means patch testing showed no redness, itching, or sensitization — including on reactive and sensitive skin types.
The most common irritants in conventional pads are:

Production: OCBON's Texas organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or chemical fertilizers for a minimum of three years. Conventional cotton is one of the most chemically intensive crops in the world — organic farming eliminates that impact at the source. Processing uses total chlorine-free (TCF) methods, removing dioxin-producing chemicals from the supply chain entirely.
After use: Conventional pads contain up to 90% plastic and take an estimated 500–800 years to break down in landfill. OCBON pads are made from biodegradable natural materials that decompose far faster. While no disposable pad is zero-waste, the difference in environmental burden over a lifetime of use — approximately 11,000 to 16,000 products — is substantial.
